I understand
the challenge of a limited work history and how it can hinder the ability to
create a resume that will hopefully set you apart from the many applicants
competing for at home positions.
There are
some tips that can really make a resume stand out if you feel you have little to
show.
Don’t focus
on what you cant add, focus on what you can.
Do you have
skills that you may be overlooking?
Well you
found this blog so that makes you somewhat computer savvy, skilled in
researching to find what you are looking for and even gives you leg up on
social media usage.
Can you
type? Test yourself there are websites you can use to test your self and see how
fast you can type. If you aren’t satisfied with your WPM then practice until
you reach your goal.
In high
school, did you do volunteer work of any kind? Have you ever had to fund raise
for something, such a sports team or your local church, maybe even door to door…..Then
guess what you have experience in marketing and fundraising.
Are you looking to work from home but have no
prior work at home experience, well if you have ever babysat from the confines
of your home, I am here to tell you that you have WORK AT HOME experience as a
child care provider.
Don’t forget
objectives. A lot of people say this takes away from a resume however, in my
opinion I have found that if you have a limited work history than providing a
strong objective can go a long way in letting future employers know what goals
you have in mind for yourself professionally.
I would
avoid personal sentiments, such as how many children you have, or that you love
the beach. Those are all wonderful things but they can actually be hindering to
you when seeking employment.
I want to
be clear, I am not saying you lie on your resume, because well….that’s illegal
and grounds for termination if your employer finds out. I am saying to make
sure you think of your self as a product, and you need to market yourself to
employers so they are interested in you.
Utilize what
skills you have picked up throughout your life and do not sell your abilities
short.
